Development Squad update, who is set to leave.

In what has been a hugely disappointing debut season for Development Squad Manager, Wayne Burnett. Several of the players he continues to select will be moving on upon expiration of their contract on 30 June 2018. This is much needed with the majority of the team looking well below the required standard to be challenging the seniors and also blocking the pathway of more talented youngsters in the academy coming through and getting game time with the under 23’s.

We will start in goal where I understand, Luke O’Reily will be leaving at the expiration of his short team deal. Why was he signed? The club rate highly both Alfie Whiteman who has appeared on the first team bench and recently rewarded Brandon Austin with a new contract until 2019. O’Reily has yet to make an appearance for the Development Squad and I would hazard a guess he never will. Favour to an agent?

At the back, I expect DR Congo international, Chrisitan Maghoma to finally move on. In my view ‘Magz’ should have left a few years ago and staying at the club is only hindering his chances of making it as a pro whilst also blocking the progress of highly talented younger centre backs such as first year, Brooklyn Lyons-Foster. Maghoma needs to be gaining senior minutes somewhere else in the football pyramid.

In midfield, Joe Pritchard, who should get a club in league 2, is simply not at the required level to make it at Tottenham Hotspur. Was offered a one year extension last summer on the back of suffering a serious injury that kept him out for the majority of last season and some impressive form at the end of the 16/17 season.  Dylan Duncan and George Marsh are other’s who may potentially be released with Tashan Oakley-Boothe and Oliver Skipp breaking through.

Several forwards have already been told they have no future at the club. Shilow Tracey, who only joined the club in January 2016 from Ebbsfleet United will be moving on. The more I have seen him play the less sure I am as to why he was signed. Below the required standard, the club have tried to utilise his size by playing him in multiple positions but it just has not worked out. Has been on trial at Southend United alongside Ryan Loft. ‘Lofty’ another Ebbsfleet boy has also been told he is free to find a new club and the powerful forward is currently training with league 2, Exeter City. Their manager, Paul Tisdale said “We are looking at Ryan Loft from Spurs as a potential loan, we’re interested, it’s not been confirmed yet but we are interested”. This loan would be as a view to a permanent deal in the summer upon expiration of his contract.

In news that will surprise some, I also understand Shayon Harrison will be leaving. He could even go permanently this month. With Shayon, he is now 20 and needs to be out playing week in week out. Struggled for game time at Yeovil during a loan spell last season and I understand there was an off the pitch incident involving him towards the end of the year that left some unhappy.

This mini clear out should enable, Burnett to call upon some of the more impressive academy players next year and aim to improve on the disastrous season we’re currently having.

Expect some of the names above to be on trial at other clubs in the coming months.

  1. I was not happy with the appointment of Burnett at the beginning and even more so now. We need to get somone more high like profile like Dennis Bergkamp Ledky King even Tim Sherwood and Ramsey

    1. What makes you think that an ex pro is more qualified to be a coach? Mourinho, Klopp, Wenger never made it as pro players.
